Interview with René Gómez
“Hasta Que Valga La Pena” has a very powerful energy and message. Could you tell us any anecdotes or inspiration behind the creation of this song?
An anecdote could be a meeting we had with Mario from the Halim Music label with DIOGENES. He told us: “Guys, we are living an important moment in the history of the country and you, as musicians, should make a song about it.”
To achieve that rehearsal and meeting, it was difficult because we had run out of a rehearsal room. So, to rehearse, our friend Robles from DEJALOSANGRAR would lend us the room suddenly when no one was there or we would rehearse in acoustic format in the apartment where I lived at that time, steps from Providencia, in the middle of the demonstrations. There was literally a guerrilla outside in the street and we had to run from the pacos to be able to rehearse. Whether we were at the demonstration or not, it was the same; They were crazy and you could easily get hurt by a bullet.
We were writing material with acoustic instruments, as can be heard on the new LP, and after the meeting the chorus of that song came out and immediately the complete song.
At that time several songs were released for two more albums, of which there are still unreleased songs. Unintentionally, the song came out, which was inspired by what was happening, but above all by the musicians. Damn, that period was difficult!
The music scene in Punta Arenas is growing rapidly. What advice would you give to emerging artists looking to make a name for themselves in this region?
First and foremost, take care of your bands! Today people do not have much sense of commitment, brotherhood or friendship; It even becomes something almost disposable. In our case, in the band we are from a generation that we have been friends for many years, like 20 years at least among those of us who have been around the longest. With a coming and going of members and collaborators, I see that the bands here that move forward are the ones that have finally prioritized their music and their commitment, going so far as to split between bands to make a date or recording. That's all you have to do: Persist!
If you could describe your new self-titled album in three words, what would they be and why?
Heavy, slow and intro-retrospective. Heavy because it is the sound that represents us, including the Moog that provides a new dimension of sub-bass. Slow because it has a suite with a zamba air and tunes… and doom sounds!
Intro-retrospective because we look within and from within. For example, the Pewen suite is the vision of the world from the eyes of a tree, metaphorically speaking about the history of time, humanity, the struggles of people... Which is also a reflection of sound, since we have also seen ourselves reflected and inspired by the sounds and instruments of the 70s, such as the Minimoog Model D that we use, the guitars and vintage equipment of the 70s, without forgetting the traditional instruments such as the bombo legüero, the trutrucas, hooves, maracas, charango, which yes They are from this time, their roots are from yesteryear.
DIOGENES, known for her unique style and profound lyrics, continues to set trends and conquer hearts with her music. “Hasta Que Valga La Pena” is another example of his commitment to quality and artistic authenticity.
